8/4/2020 – Metabolic Health, Hunger, & Defense Strategies

Dr. Tro started the call with his ‘Science Corner’, talking about two interesting case reports about metabolic health and how quickly one can reverse a high A1c with a ketogenic approach, even with minimal weight loss. The other study was from Dr. Tro’s own practice, showing rapid changes to extreme triglycerides using a ketogenic and intermittent fasting approach.

Amy wrote an outstanding blog, “Are You Hungry?” where she spoke about personal experiences understanding hunger, and also expanded on our team’s 6-point “Defenses” strategy to help you prepare yourself for those hungry moments to stack the deck in your favor.

Dr. Tro, Amy and Brian then talked about practical strategies and tips they use when building up these defensive strategies to make them stronger. They also discussed things to be mindful of in order to learn from patterns and mistakes. By doing so, we turn ”fails” into wins by using what you learned to prevent future mistakes.

As always, participants had the chance to ask questions (directly on the Zoom call, in advance via email, or through Zoom chat), and Amy, Brian and Dr. Tro took turns responding. Participants can submit questions in advance to [email protected]. Questions will be responded to each week, and we will try to devote the third meeting of each month to specifically addressing questions we receive.

When Dr. Tro turned the meeting over to participants to share their inspiring journeys, we heard amazing stories from people who, through adopting a low-carb way of eating, were able to reclaim their health and lower their A1c and triglycerides.

We heard story after story of people who reversed course on their own metabolic illness — someone who lost 55 pounds and no longer has a pre-diabetic A1c after seeing a friend have success doing a ketogenic approach. He also was able to get off antidepressants and reverse stage 3 kidney disease.

We heard an amazing story from a member who had an emotional visit with her doctor after her blood work came back, and was able to eliminate blood pressure medications she had been on for over 20 years. She also was able to come off metformin, lower her triglycerides nearly 100 points into the 60s, raise her HDL and achieve a 20+ pound weight loss.

Another member who was on the LCMD podcast reversed metabolic disease, addiction, pre-diabetes and 35 years of bipolar disorder with minimal weight loss. Another participant was able to stop lifelong allergy shots and medications, lowered inflammation and A1c, and inspired her husband to also reverse his metabolic issues.

We also heard other stories of people improving thyroid and cardiovascular issues, lost weight, and feeling better and getting their lives back. The key points I took from this Town Hall: community support is very important and instrumental to success. Also, weight loss is often secondary to the other health improvements you gain from a low carb, ketogenic, IF approach.

The following studies were shared during the meeting:

Brian Wiley
Brian Wiley is a Certified Health Coach who has struggled with food addiction and battled with obesity for most of his life. Being advised with mainstream approaches as his solution, along with the standard, “eat less, move more” resulted in minimal, or no success with eventual regain. In 2009, he reached his highest weight of 265 pounds. His doctor advised and encouraged him to take medications after his blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol reached dangerous levels at the age of only 35. His commitment to a low carb lifestyle resulted in a 100-pound weight loss, and he was able to reverse his abnormal health markers improving his heart health and avoiding type 2 diabetes. Brian has maintained his weight loss for the last 11 years. “I see people everyday on social media and in real life and they’re struggling. They’re going through the same struggles of food addiction, unhealthy eating patterns, and unsuccessful dieting like I did. I want to serve as an example that this approach can be successful. It is not a fad, and is a healthy long-term lifestyle solution.” Brian is also an ACE certified personal trainer. Brian was a featured guest on Episode 29 of the Low Carb MD podcast and on Vinnie Tortorich’s Fitness Confidential Saturday Success Story. Brian has also been featured on DietDoctor, Atkins and various other publications
