8/25/20 – Remembering Your “Why”

Last week’s online group coaching meeting, hosted by Dr. Tro’s Medical Weight Loss & Direct Primary Care, continued its discussion around metabolic health. Dr. Tro Kalayjian shared studies about supplements and electrolytes which included some points on the importance of staying hydrated, ways to get magnesium through both foods and supplements, and the dietary effects of food on mental health.

Dr. Tro, Amy and Brian then focused the meeting on “Remembering Your Why”– what motivates them to continue to strive for good health. Many participants shared moving anecdotes about their “why” as well. Some examples included being healthy for their children/family, weight loss, health markers, vanity, inspiring others, medical issues, getting off medication, avoiding surgery and more. The main takeaway: remembering our “why” can be crucial to help make good decisions when times are tough.

Dr. Tro discussed the following studies during the meeting:

  • A brief diet intervention can reduce symptoms of depression in young adults https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0222768
  • A 12-week, parallel-group, single-blind, randomized controlled trial of a dietary intervention in the treatment of moderate to severe depression, these results indicate that dietary improvement may provide an efficacious and accessible treatment strategy for the management of this highly prevalent mental disorder, the benefits of which could extend to the management of common co-morbidities. https://doi.org/10.1186/s12916-017-0791-y
  • Effects of berberine on blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a systematic literature review and a meta-analysis – https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30393248/
  • Magnesium supplementation appears to have a beneficial role and improves glucose parameters in people with diabetes and also improves insulin-sensitivity parameters in those at high risk of diabetes. – https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27530471/
